Brief Background
From the beginning, the Superferry did everything in its power to block an independent environmental impact study, saying an EIS would "kill" the project. If the Superferry is truly "environmentally friendly," why was the company so afraid of an independent EIS? The time it would have taken to make the report was minor compared to the damaging impact Superferry operations almost certainly will have. If the Hawaii Superferry truly understood its kuleana and wished to malama the islands, Superferry would have really looked at the broad reaching impact and made true adjustments, but this cuts profits. The County Councils of Kaua'i, Maui, and Big Island, all called for an independent EIS, but it was the effect of two state politicians—one exempted Superferry from an EIS, and one blocked a vote on this important issue. Now, it is simply up to the citizens of Hawai'i to not support this mode of transportation that threatens to kill endangered humpback whale mothers and calves, harbor easy transport of crystal meth ("Ice"), overload our neighbor island single lane highways, and bring invasive species that once done, can't be undone.
